Hut History Year 1: A Hole in the Ground

Year 2  |  Year 3  |  Year 4 |  Year 5
We are making a fieldstone pavilion with fireplace, similar to what you might find in a state park...Here is the site with just a couple of small trees and bushes removed. It was originally marked off without tools, using what surveyors and architects call "the dragging of the heel" technique. There was actually a small ring of rocks that looked like a fire pit had already been there... we'll just be making some slight improvements. Construction Photo
Construction Photo After the space was cleared, MK dug a channel for a frost-wall/foundation type of thing with the back hoe. Construction Photo
Construction Photo Then I dug out 4x4' holes at each corner where there will be tapered columns 8' high and about 2x2' at the top. They'll support the roof. Construction Photo
Construction Photo For those of you keeping score at home, the hut is 15' deep and tapered like a speaker cone: 18' in the front and around 13' in the back. Construction Photo
So people have been asking me what I did on my summer vacation...Here is a good part of it: Cutting trees, moving rocks (mostly moving rocks), moving sand, mixing cement and now even measuring. After abandoning the "tiki bar"concept, I've started filling in the hole with rocks and cement.
