IBM Netvista S42: Fresh Windows XP Installation and Configuration
Summary: This page shows the steps to installing a new copy of Windows XP on an older IBM Netvista S42 desktop computer. I need these notes because it was not easy to do. They may be useful for other models of the Netvista series, so they are posted here. I also list my favorite configuration changes that can be made under Windows XP (linked). Windows XP is a very old operating system, but it has been updated all the way through 2009 and, you don't have many choices for older hardware if you want to use Windows software.
Hardware: IBM Netvista S42
Machine Type: 8319
Model Number: xx1
Part Number: 24P3782
Date: 2003-03-16
Audio: ADI SoundMax Cadenza (on board)
Graphics: Intel Extreme Graphics (on board)
BIOS Key: F1 at boot
- Download the required IBM drivers from Lenovo and Windows XP Service Pack 2 and burn them to a CD. I think that I also used the disk that came with the IBM computer for the ethernet driver(?).
- Insert Windows XP disk and choose to reformat all to NTFS
- Install Windows XP Service Pack 2 if you can get an installable file. Otherwise, wait until you can do it online.
- NOTE: I had no network connectivity at this point.
- Install the IBM-Lenovo drivers in chronological order: INF Utility, SoundMAX Audio, Ethernet Intel, Fax-Modem, IBM Flash, Graphics, Intervideo Win DVD, Ethernet2 (I had already updated the BIOS).
- After restarting the computer, there was still no network connectivity. This is what I did to get it working.
-
- You may need to load IBM Tools from the disk, or it may have come from the downloads(?).
- Windows Control Panel -> Add Hardware
- Select "Wizard Search" and then click on "Ethernet Controller" with question mark.
- Choose to install software from specific location.
- Include this in search C:\IBMTools\Drivers\Q38Z01US\Pro100\WSO3XP32
- My note is unclear here, but check the video controller. New Hardware -> Video Controller. Mine said E49Z77US \ Win2000 Intel Graphics Controller.
- Go online and install IE8. It will want the new updating tool.
- Can now install Service Pack 3 and new updates.
That is it for the operating system installation. Here are my "notes to self" of what to do after installing a fresh copy of Windows XP.
