Why the icons?

The icons in the footer section of my pages are links to software that I have used. The software that I link to is always free (no cost) for personal use and sometimes no cost for anybody. They are also free as in open source. That means you are free to view the source code of the program and change it to your liking*. How cool is that? Reasons for the icons:

• I'm cheap. Don't want the free stuff to go away.
• Sharing is good for you.
• Freedom is good for you.
• I'm not a programmer, so I advertise.
• Free software supports competition and choice. No vendor lock-in.
• Software with more science, less marketing hype.
