The quickest way to get from southern Los Angeles to San Francisco would be along this inland Interstate route I5, roughly 8 hours of driving. Inland, you will see lots and lots of farms fed by a canal system from the Sierra Nevadas and some industrial type animal farms. If you are not in a hurry, you should drive along the Pacific Coastal Highway because the scenery is much more interesting. The link goes to a photo tour from three days of touring on vacation.
