So the Lower East Side is another optional site for tourists on vacation (holiday). There is some interesting architecture, like in Greenwich Village, but also more industrial warehouse-type places, less restaurants, and the most restaurant equipment you've ever seen in one place. To get a nice view of the East River and Brooklyn, stop by East River Park. There are foot bridges over the FDR Drive at Houston and Delancey Streets.

As far as my walking tour of the NYC neighborhoods goes, you can take either Houston or Delancey west until you get to Mulberry Street and head south (left) to get to Little Italy. To skip this area, you can still use Houston at the south end of the East Village. If you have time, look into parallel streets to either of these two, as they are usually filled with lots of cars and not very scenic.
