Fresh Cole Slaw Recipe – Creamy Salad Dressing
I looked through a lot of recipes for creamy cole slaw dressings and picked out what I thought was best. I’ve tried it several times and I think I got lucky. There hasn’t been anything I wanted to change. Enjoy.
Coleslaw Salad Ingredients
- 1 head cabbage, cut thin
- 1/4 head red cabbage, cut thin (optional)
- 1 large carrot, peeled and shredded (optional)
Creamy Coleslaw Salad Dressing Recipe (1 Cup)
- 4 tblsp simple syrup[1]
- 4 tblsp sugar
- 2 tblsp white vinegar
- 1/2 tsp lemon juice
- 2 tsp garlic powder (or garlic salt)
- 2 tsp onion powder (or onion salt)
- 1 tsp celery seed
- salt to taste
- Approximately 12 tblsp real mayonnaise (~3/4 cup)
Preparation of Creamy Coleslaw
- Total volume = Just under 4 quarts, loosely packed, no dressing.
- Approximate prep time = 30 mins.
- Cook time = None.
- Cut up the vegetables and store separately. Mix only before eating! (The most important step).
- For the dressing, add all ingredients EXCEPT mayonnaise in a small bowl and mix well.
- Add 1/2 the mayonnaise and mix.
- Add mayonnaise in parts and mix to reach desired consistency.
Notes
- [1]Simple syrup is a 1:1 mix of white sugar and water. I have it on hand to make my own sodas, but you can break it down to 1/2 sugar + 1/2 water.
- For one large helping, I usually only need 1-2 tablespoons of dressing. My estimate for a larger batch was 3/4 cup dressing per 2 quarts dry cabbage, but I think it makes the most sense to add LESS dressing than you need, mix the salad, and then slowly add more so it doesn’t become soupy.
- While I really like this recipe and how simple and quick it is, my favoriteΒ Cole Slaw RecipeΒ is a vegan sesame-soy-ginger recipe (my own).
