Portsmouth NH

Portsmouth is a small New England town at the mouth of the Piscataqua river, which separates New Hampshire and Maine. It's a protected harbor area not directly on the ocean. A naval shipyard can be seen across the river. Although it is still a working port with that can accept large tanker ships, the downtown area caters well to tourists and travelers.

If you are heading north a long distance to visit Acadia National Park or Some other "Downeast" Maine location, you might consider stopping for the night at either Portsmouth, NH or Portland, ME. If you are interested in doing more activities, then Portland might be better. Portsmouth has the advantage of a more walkable downtown where you can pretty much pass by all the restaurants and check them out. Portland is a larger city and things are more spread out.
