Caneel Bay Resort was founded by Laurance Rockefeller in the 50s and jump-started the use of the US Virgin Islands as tourist attractions. The buildings are low and built into the surroundings nicely. The difference between this and most of the other places on St. John is that the resort is right on the beach and you don't have to travel to it, or sleep in a tent, like at Cinnamon Bay Campgrounds. That said, the beach I saw was not as impressive as either Cinnamon Bay Beach or Trunk Bay Beach.

The self-centered Self Centre is part of the resort. You can get yoga, meditation, and energy therapies with your vacation. Meh. A piƱa colada or singing HU are probably cheaper alternatives.

A couple more extras you get with this place are the nice outdoor restaurant right on the beach, lots of toys to play with in and around the water (for guests only), and a private water taxi to take you to downtown Cruz Bay. Although being that far from town can be both a plus and a minus.
