These photos are a snapshot of the historical section of Beijing with many older buildings and small shops. Many of these scenes might look much different now.

Old Beijing Character

I read that the section of Beijing known as “Old Beijing” is being torn down to make way for high-rise buildings. I can’t say how much is left, but in 2002 this part of the city was like the SOHO / Greenwich Village / low part of town with older stores and houses. A great place to find someone making noodles. That noodle restaurant had bowls of fresh garlic to put in your dish. Simply amazing. The green jars below are tea, but of course you’d want to sit down and taste it before you bought some, wouldn’t you?
