Akumal – Downtown and the Beach

akumal beach playa

The first photo shows the foot bridge about a 10 minute walk outside of Akumal Beach [Playa]. If you stay in one of the Akumal Condos, you would probably call the area with most of the stores and restaurants “downtown Akumal”. Note that if you take the Collectivo mini vans, that area of Akumal is called “Akumal Playa”. There is another set of stores, to the right in the photo, that is called “Akumal Peublo” (Akumal town). The bright yellow stop is for the Collectivos.

Akumal was a great place to have a quiet and relaxing vacation. There were quite a few familes with small children in this area. If we didn’t want to visit the other tourist sites, everything that we needed was within a 20 min walk (you can rent bikes, I think). So I am exposing my middle-aged-ness once again by saying I’m so very glad we didn’t stay in Cancun or Playa del Carmen.

There is a a supermarket and the office of Akumal Travel Services where we booked our tours to Chichen ItzaCoba, and Tulum. There is an ecological center in Akumal, and there are a couple of ecological parks and/or tours you can to on in the area.
