375 Looney Tunes Recognized by Plex

The trick to getting Looney Tunes cartoons recognized by a Plex server lookup is to name them for what they are, actual movie shorts. Many older people grew up watching these cartoons on television, but they are actually created as “movie shorts”. Classifying them in Plex as “movies” will allow correct meta-data lookups.

Looney Tunes Golden Collection Experience

After ripping a few Discs using handbrake in Linux, I tried to add a few Looney Tunes cartoons to my Plex server as TV shows and it didn’t work. After searching online, I found the real trick was to add the cartoons to Plex as movies.

Since I need to enter a title for each track in Handbrake before I rip the disc, I created a list with the titles and years to 1) Ensure a proper lookup, and 2) Make it easy for me to later sort them by dates by looking at the title. I have put the text file looney-tunes-golden-collection.txt on my server, but if you don’t feel comfortable downloading a file, you can copy and paste the text below. Please let me know if you find a mistake.

Viewing Looney Tunes in Plex

You can see from the DVD inserts that many of the discs have a “theme” to them but these were of no use to me. I split the cartoons up by date so that there was a reasonable amount of icons to scroll through in each bucket. I came up with Looney_Tunes_ and then 1930s, 1940-44, 1945-49, 1950-54, 1955-59, 1960s.

The Looney Tunes Extras were more difficult. When ripping the disc, I had never watch the DVD, so just named them 11a, 11b, 11c,… and then named them when I could watch the video file on my comptuer. Many of the “extra” files (not listed on the insert) are just duplicate cartoons rearranged and don’t add any value. For the real extra stuff, I added a prefix to similar files so that they would sort as movies (no metadata) by the title name. I came up with these different types:

• Behind_the_Tunes_ (special intro, gave a number)
• Comments_ (interviews not in Behind the Tunes)
• Looney_Tunes_Early (really old cartoons)
• Special_ (TV specials)
• Storyboard_ (artists drawings)
• The_Bugs_Bunny_Show_ (real TV show, #s)
